3 Reasons to Install Rainwater Tanks on Your Farm

If your farm is in a remote location, then you might struggle to get a cost-effective water supply. To make things easier, you can install one or more rainwater harvesting tanks on your property. How will this help?

1. Get a Consistent Water Supply

You might not have enough rainfall during the hot summer months to water your crops and livestock. Drought years can make things worse.

So, you'll have to find a way to get extra water around your farm. Setting up connections to mains water supplies in more remote locations can be expensive, as can drilling bore holes for wells.

Rainwater tanks give you an effective and cheaper way of creating a consistent water supply. These tanks harvest water whenever it rains. They then store the water for you until you need to use it. So, your tanks will naturally fill up during rainy periods; you can use this supply when the weather is drier.

2. Get Better Quality Water

Water quality is important in agricultural environments. Some supplies, such as water from dams, aren't always the right quality for your needs. For example, you need clean and safe water for your livestock and crops.

Plus, if you want to use a rainwater tank to supply water to your home, then quality becomes a bigger issue. You might need to treat some water sources to make the water fit for domestic use.

If you install rainwater tanks, then you get some quality advantages. Rainwater is typically purer than water from other supply sources. It is safe to use on your animals, on your crops and in your home. As long as you choose the right tank material and site your tank carefully to keep it shaded, then your tank should provide high-quality water.

3. Get a Useful Water Supply for Bushfires

If you live in a bushfire area, then you need to find a way to protect your buildings, animals and crops from fire damage. If you live in a remote area, then it might take firefighters some time to get out to your farm. A bushfire could have done most of its damage before they can get to you.

If you have rainwater tanks on your farm, then you can also use the water they store to help you fight bushfires as soon as you spot a problem. At the very least, this could help you keep a fire at bay until firefighters arrive.

About Me
Skinning, Butchering and Smoking: Guide to Ag Supplies for Meat

My favourite part of living on a farm is the skinning, butchering and smoking of meat. We have worked hard to keep our farm as diverse as possible, and because of that, I don't just deal with one crop all day long. Instead, I get to do a range of tasks. Whether I am smoking meat or feeding chickens, the right equipment helps. In this blog, I am going to focus on agricultural supplies and equipment for meat production but then also look at supplies for other parts of the farm as well. If you have questions, I hope these posts help you. Enjoy!
